Biking

A nose for trouble

I may have learned something last night from Mike Pizzio.

Weekend plans: How about a Great Backyard Camp Out?

Do the kids bug you about going camping? When they do, do you flashback to your youth and those ill-fated trips mom and dad dragged you on, the ones where your breakfast eggs were peppered with camp grit, dad insisted on death-march hikes in your Keds and your canvass tent inevitably leaked  during a wee-hours thunderstorm?

The Tarheel: One hot and fast (for some) MTB race

No official results to report from Sunday’s The Tarheel, the second in TORC’s five-race summer XC MTB series. “I’ll probably get to them Tuesday or Wednesday,” race director Sean Callihan said as the race wound down. “I have to do my expense report for work tonight.

Chapel Hill’s Matthew Lee wins 2,745-mile Tour Divide

On June 12, Chapel Hill’s Matthew Lee set off on a bike ride in Banff, Alberta. On Tuesday at 9:45 a.m., 17 days, 23 hours and 45 minutes later, he ended his ride in the dusty border town of Antelope Wells, N.M., the first of 42 riders to complete this year’s 2,745-mile Tour Divide mountain bike race. It was Lee’s second straight Tour victory and  and his fourth overall.

Scenes from a Huck-A-Buck

A sly bunch, that Happy Fun Racing crew. On the surface, this local “face club” that for eight years has sponsored the Huck-A-Buck mountain bike race at Lake Crabtree County Park appears to be a happy-go-lucky, laid back bunch. There was race organizer Chris Pappas riding a unicycle between tasks. There was Mike Crocker filling in the assembled with news of the next Happy Fun event, the Alley Cat, which seems to involve equal parts drinking and riding. There was MC Pat Lundergan on the P.A., playing equal parts color commentator and Friars Club Roast MC.

Volunteers make a Huck-A-Buck go ‘round. (And stop.)

I heard the shriek first, then the “What the — ?” I did a 180 to see what the commotion was about some 20 yards behind me in the forest. “Uh oh ... .”

Races like Sunday’s Huck-A-Buck at Lake Crabtree County Park wouldn’t happen without volunteers. Sunday’s race was run by all volunteers (with the exception of the electronic timing crew from Off ‘n Running Sports). As race MC Pat Lundergan noted over the PA throughout the event, the Huck-A-Buck is the lone source of revenue for his Happy Fun Racing club. Some of the volunteers — Pat, Chris Pappas, Mike Crocker — are more seasoned, having been a part of the 8-year-old race, in some cases, since the beginning. Other volunteers, however ... .

Johnson Subaru endurance race dates set — sorta

TriangleMTB reports that a preliminary — very preliminary — schedule has been set for the fall 2009/10 Johnson Subaru Endurance Series, four six-hour mountain bike races to keep the local fat tire crowd motivated throughout the offseason. Those tentative dates are:

October 10 — Either "Curse at the Crab" at Lake Crabtree County Park or a not-yet-named race at Little River Regional Park.
November 7 — "The Beatdown at Briar Chapel" “or something to that effect.”
February 20 — "6 Hours on the Lake" at Harris Lake County Park.
March 20 — Either "Curse" or Little River, whichever doesn’t happen on Oct. 10.

As details firm up you can find updated info here, at TriangleMTB.com or at the TORC Web site.

Reaction at the Reactor

Yesterday’s Race at the Reactor, the fourth race in the Triangle Off-Road Cyclists’ five-part Summer XC Series drew 130 riders. I say “riders” even though it’s a race, because honesty occasionally surfaces among the participants.

“You racing in that?” I asked Chris Pappas (right) of Happy Fun Racing fame during early morning registration. By that, I meant the kilt he was wearing.
“I’m not racing in this,” he replied with a coquettish smile. “I’m racing ... well, I’m riding. I paid $20, so I’m riding.” (But, alas, only for a lap and a half in the Single Speed Men’s race; His crank bolts broke midway through Lap 2.)

Johnson Subaru XC Series shows mountain biking strong in the Triangle

Sunday’s Race at the Reactor concluded the Championship Series portion of TORC’s four-race 2009 Johnson Subaru XC Series. Some quick crunching of the numbers underscores that mountain biking is doing quite well in the Triangle.
